mental images offers public mailing lists for discussion of shaders and mental ray. These lists are intended for sharing ideas, shaders, and problems. They are not edited or moderated by mental images.
Although mental images reads these lists and may occasionally join in, these are not support lists with guaranteed replies and problem solutions - mental ray and the shaders are always part of third party products, whose vendors handle this kind of support. mental images can not provide support for third-party products.
List charters and rules
At this time, three lists are available: | |
|---|---|
shader@mentalimages.com | |
| For discussions about shaders - what is available, what can be done with them, and how to write shaders. Announcements of freely available shaders are also welcome; in some cases mental images may be able to host free packages on our FTP server for public download. |
mentalray@mentalimages.com | |
For discussions about mental ray itself - what it can do, how to do it best, performance hints, installation information, how to run server networks, and other mental ray issues except shader issues, which should go to shader@mentalimages.com. | |
shader-announce@mentalimages.com | |
When shaders or new versions of shaders, either those made available by mental images or third parties, become available for public download at mental images' FTP server (ftp.mentalimages.com), mental images will post a short notice here. The list may also be used to announce important announcements that mental images considers important to all shader users or writers. Only mental images can post to this list. This list is expected to carry a low volume, and is intended for people who do not wish to read the full lists. | |
It is not allowed to post advertisement, other commercial solicitations, or mail floods (UCE, unsolicited commercial email; UBE, unsolicited bulk email; collectively known as spam). Any form of harvesting addresses or other personal information is not allowed. Violators will be excluded from the lists. When posting material, the poster is responsible for ensuring that no intellectual property or other laws are violated. For example, do not post proprietary source code or material that you found but are not sure whether someone holds copyrights to. By posting to the list, you agree to release all posted information to the public domain.
If you intend to make shaders or source code available, the same intellectual property concerns apply. Make sure that you own what you post, and that the material is free of third-party rights such as patent protection.
Ideally, put posted software under an open-source license such as the GPL (see www.gnu.org), and supply HTML documentation.
mental images will not censor or edit mailing list contributions.
mental images does not assume responsibility or liability for material posted on the list.
How to subscribe and unsubscribe
Do not send requests to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mailing lists. Instead, send a short mail to the maintenance address:
- majordomo@mentalimages.com
The mail should contain the subscription or unsubscription requests, one per line. Choose one or more of these:
- subscribe shader@mentalimages.com
- subscribe mentalray@mentalimages.com
- subscribe shader-announce@mentalimages.com
- unsubscribe shader@mentalimages.com
- unsubscribe mentalray@mentalimages.com
- unsubscribe shader-announce@mentalimages.com
You can also send the request "help'', as always on a line by itself. The subject of the mail is ignored.
Privacy statement
The subscription list of these mailing lists, and any mail records that appear in mental images' server logs, will not be used for any purpose other than standard server maintenance and distributing mail posted to the respective mailing lists and, if deemed neccessary at mental images' sole discretion to ensure proper operation, for purposes like terminating DOS attacks and spamming. mental images will not offer subscription lists or other personal information to third parties. This includes list members; the majordomo who command will not work.
All accesses of mental images' FTP server (ftp.mentalimages.com) are logged. The logs are subject to the same privacy protection as the subscription lists.
